The World Test Championship is a tournament organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to determine the best Test cricket team in the world. The inaugural edition of the tournament began in 2019 and ended with the final match between India and New Zealand in June 2021.

The World Test Championship is a two-year cycle that involves the top nine ranked Test teams playing against each other in a series of bilateral series. Each series consists of a maximum of five matches, and points are awarded based on the result of each match. A win earns a team 12 points, a tie earns 6 points, and a draw earns 4 points. If a series is drawn, the points are split between the two teams.

At the end of the two-year cycle, the two teams with the highest points in the standings qualify for the final, which is a one-off match played over five days. The team with the higher points in the standings hosts the final. In case of a tie or a draw in the final, the teams will share the trophy.

The 2019-21 cycle of the World Test Championship saw India and New Zealand qualify for the final. The final was played at the Rose Bowl in Southampton, England, and saw New Zealand defeat India by 8 wickets to become the first-ever winners of the tournament.

The World Test Championship has been created to provide context and meaning to Test cricket, which is often considered the purest form of the game. The tournament has received mixed reviews, with some critics arguing that it needs more teams to be involved, while others believe that the format needs to be tweaked to make it more exciting.
