In the twenty-fifth century, the only thing more dangerous than space travel is the madness that threatens everyone on the journey. Clones were once a solution to issues of labor and now they serve space travelers as companions. Dr. Yaro Volkov is a professor of Xenological Studies on Titan. She's pulled away from her class by a dog of the military, her brother, Nester. Once onboard a military ship, she joins a team of scientists at the top of their fields. They've all been gathered to respond to a distress signal:

Aliens; hostile.

Yaro and the researchers have dedicated their lives to pondering the possibility of aliens. It is up to them to create a hypothetical framework of the aliens' capabilities. Yaro isn't liked by the other researches and she despises her brother. To help her cope, she's been given a clone companion, a sweet scientist with a perfect body, Darla. Yaro finds the practice of companions disgusting, but she is in real danger of losing her mind.
