Dr. Zapata spends his days in a high security government prison as punishment for his help in Forty's escape. When he witnesses his fellow inmates fall to Dr. Taft's biological weapon, the Melt, he realizes that he must correct his past wrongs with the help of an unlikely ally.

Meanwhile, Forty is finally happy. After escaping from the compound, she finally has everything she's ever wanted: a family. Now cohabitating with Cade's group and other Chupas, Forty finally feels like there are people who love her unconditionally.

However, as Forty has learned, happiness only lasts for so long. Winter brings not only seasonal hazards, but the reminder that the biological weapon Dr. Taft has released is wreaking havoc across the North American continent.
