He forms strong bonds with his fellow soldiers, and receives letters from home that remind him of the life he's left behind. Upon returning home, John faces difficulties transitioning to civilian life and coping with PTSD. However, he finds support in his community and from strangers who offer unexpected kindness. He seeks forgiveness from his estranged wife and works to rebuild their relationship. Eventually, John begins to find a sense of purpose and learns to cope with his PTSD through therapy. He reflects on the legacy of the war and the impact it has on the nation and its people, while also contemplating the lessons he has learned about war, sacrifice, and humanity.

Maria O'Leary lives in a small town in Georgia, during World War II. Nothing exciting has happened to her in twenty years of life. That is until she meets the new boy in town. That was the moment her life would change. Before, all she wanted was for her brother to come home from the war safely, after meeting Tony Martin all she wanted was for him and her family to stay alive, no matter the cost to herself. Her mother is worried about the toll Tony is taking on her daughter. Mostly about her small food intake. Tony had never really had friends and planned on never falling in love due to the danger it would put them in. But he can't help falling in love with the kind, gentle, firecracker that is Maria. But even he can't protect her from the man he owes money to. And after enlisting, Tony can't protect Maria from her own insecurities and body issues. War doesn't always involve guns and bombs.
