Voldemort gets a prophecy that a baby is destined to be his downfall so he heads to Godric's Hollow to kill the baby. But something in the Dark Lord softens when he sees Harry James Potter giggling at him. So killing the young boy, the spell backfires onto him, killing him.

Malfoy, Bella and Barty preform a ritual on Toms diary, bring him back, 50% saner. Tom Riddle, after seeing the young boy in Draco's room, forms a connection instantly. He ends up adopting the young boy.
