Summer is on, and Aleksandr Dayton is ready to help his best friend prepare to become a student for the Lakewood Academy, a school for young heroes, in the fall. Despite his lack of powers, Alek does all he can to support his family and best friend with their skills and training, even if it means staying in the shadows while everyone else is in the spotlight. Except, when Alek's powers show up unexpectedly, he finds the shadows more comforting than he initially thought. After encountering one of the most dangerous villains on the planet, Alek finds himself walking through the doors of Ashfield Academy, a school designed to train young villains. With the weight of his morals on his shoulders, Alek finds that neither the world of heroes nor villains is right for him. With his only ally now being a long-lost family member, Alek has to figure out how to get control of his abilities quickly, preferably before finals week begins.

It seems like everyone Lake knows has already met their other half. He's spent years in waiting but has finally turned his back on fate. The counterpart system is simple but his life is not, so he doesn't expect it to work for him as it has for everyone else. He joins the League as the next logical step in his life. It's the best option for anyone with powers, and Lake can control ice. His new career will serve as a distraction from the disappointment of the counterpart system if nothing else. When Lake is assigned to an undercover operation that he's out of his depth with from the beginning, he gets far more than he bargained for. His friends have told him their stories of how they met their counterparts, but he's pretty sure that he can top all of them after he encounters the son of the man he is supposed to arrest.
