The Nation of Ayenor's largest island, Avedryl, Is known for two things differing from the mainland:
its rigorous schooling of its residents, and it's distaste for dark elves.
distaste is putting it lightly; they are forced out of society, and are only able to return briefly for their schooling, and are forced out once their studies have ended.
Isham Synth, a dark elf, was born into this cycle of hatred long before it started. When he finally reaches the age to begin his schooling, he realizes that the world truly is as cruel as his family had warned him it was. However, one bright and cheery avariel girl would attempt to change his view of those outside his circle.

Basil's story went to Strixhaven and Alfur ended up as an NPC in a separate story.
