Mia thought she had time. After she'd been kidnapped as an infant and taken to a horrible, horrible place where they'd twisted her very genes, she miraculously, impossibly escaped. She'd been found and returned to her father, who didn't want her and who had no idea where'd she been for the last twelve years, and didn't particularly care. She can go to school and ignore the awful memories tugging at her mind.
But her captors want her back. She's too valuable-- too powerful-- to escape that easily. But after she narrowly survives a murder attempt, she realizes that her former captors are not the only ones who want her recaptured-- or dead.
