In the small town of Hawkins, Indiana, Mike Wheeler and Ariel Blake have been sworn enemies for as long as anyone can remember. Mike, the leader of his group of friends, thinks Ariel is nothing more than a stuck-up princess. Ariel, on the other hand, can't stand Mike's arrogant attitude and his constant need to be the center of attention.
But everything changes when the fall of 1984 rolls around. As the town prepares for the annual holiday, Halloween, Mike and Ariel find themselves spending more and more time together. They discover they have more in common than they ever imagined and before they know it, they're falling for each other.
As their relationship blossoms, Mike and Ariel must navigate the challenges of being 13-year-olds in a small town with odd things constantly around them. They face disapproving parents, nosy neighbors, and the fear of being ridiculed by their friends. But through it all, they hold onto their love for each other and the hope that they can make it work.
