We follow the journey of Gisel, a serf at a Monastery, who dreams of liberty in the monastery's herb garden amidst daily torment from the nuns. Her life takes a dramatic turn when she overhears a crucial conversation about the monastery's finances between the Bishop and the Prioress, leading to her discovery and subsequent sale to another monastery. However, Hildegard, the herbalist and Gisel's supporter, intervenes, allowing Lorenz, the monastery's carpenter who has long courted Gisel, to buy her freedom. They embark on a challenging new life as settlers in the Bohemian Forest. Joining a group led by the locator Elias, they move from Passau to Freiung, where they want to build a new settlement. Here, Gisel experiences the bitter and sweet aspects of her newfound freedom.
Gisel's story is one of resilience and self-discovery. Freed by Elias, she fights for survival and gradually rebuilds her life in Freiung, learning the true essence of freedom.
