Being a shifter is like having two distinct, yet totally cohesive parts to yourself. On one hand, I have my own thoughts, desires, and control over myself and her. On the other hand, she has her own ideas and instincts that drive my own. I can control her or back off and let her control us both. We're the same, but different. She's both something I can control, and something I can't. It's a very unique and utterly confusing thing to explain when it's all you've ever known.

For any other Shifter, this would be fine, and they could just take the form of a human. Super easy, right? They've lived with humans for seven years, wearing cloaks and keeping their eyes down to avoid unwanted attention. This worked fine, at least it did, until they literally bumped into Eliza, a girl their age. Luckily, their wonky powers shifted them into a creature that resembles a human, but it's bound to change eventually, and Eliza will learn the truth. And Eliza is the only friend they've had in a long time. Can the Shifter keep their origins a secret and stay in the only place that's ever felt like home?
