Georgie is a five year old boy, who is turning six soon. He lives with his mother in a shabby apartment, over in downtown Brooklyn. His mother is an alcoholic dealing with her husband's desertion. Georgie keeps his ball Red in his hands every day. Signifying the time in his life when his parents actually had love for one another it gives him hope, hope to survive the cruel fate he's been dealt. Georgie's mother is quite neglectful as a parent and doesn't seem to care what he does. She never pays mind to Georgie, so he wanders around during the day by himself. One day, he comes upon a man in the stairs of their apartment who intrigued him. Mathias, a middle aged man who's injured and homeless is soon befriended by Georgie. A friendship evolves between the two, for Georgie is searching for paternal/maternal love, and Mathias is looking for someone/something to give him a reason to keep living.

Georgie questions humanity and why people are the way they are. What he doesn't realize is, how much he is changing people's viewpoints already. Mathias has been to hell and back. He has had a difficult life and has considered taking the easy way out a few times. Mathias learns later on to put his fate in God's hands, forgive himself, and move on from his past. Georgie teaches him that God let him stay for a reason.
