Mariam is a 15 year old girl who fled the war in Lebanon with her family. She thought her new life in Australia would be full of opportunities but she faced an unexpected struggle in high school. Mariam wore a hijab and practiced the Islamic religion, which made her a target for judgement from her classmates. She felt isolated and discriminated against, but still held her head high with dignity and grace. Despite the constant discrimination, Mariam found herself attracted to Khaled, the infamous kickboxer and popular guy at school. Her feelings for him were troublesome, as she was unsure if he would accept her for who she truly was. Mariam had a passion for becoming a teacher, and she hoped to inspire her students to become accepting of different cultures and religions. She believed that education was the key to bringing people of different backgrounds together and breaking down barriers.
