The world was bursting at the seams with life and magic and prosperity. But one day, the gods disappeared...

All her life, McKayla had been able to see past the Masquerade. She could see magic and powers and skills that Ordinaries could not. Of course, as she grew older, she was told not to speak of such things, for they didn't exist. Right?
Now, at nineteen years old, she's a detective for a branch of the government that specializes in magic, and those who wield it, solving cases and arresting criminals before they can deal too much damage upon the world. But no matter how fast she runs, she can't escape what happened two years ago, or the memories of the friend she lost.
But when a sparky youngster and a childhood friend/crush that she hadn't seen in years enter her life, she realizes that there's things going on in the world that don't quite make sense. And they concern her....

8 years ago, vengeful magicfolk, tired of the discrimination and culling of their kind, rose up against the plainfolk kingdom in the north after a devastating curse swept through the kingdom. Now, a young witch with a past to hide, tries to live a peaceful life in solitude, but yearns to attend the new mage academy. After a long period of laying low, fate would call upon her once again, this time in the form of a peculiar masked stranger from a faraway land. A/N: I started writing this as lore for my original character and it spiraled into a whole new universe with new characters. I don't really read much, so my partner helped a lot in terms of brainstorming and editing. It's written for fun, so have fun reading!

𝐓𝐞𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐞 𝐉. 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐡 wasn't actually born in Tennessee. He grew up forty miles south of the border, in a Mississippi river-town. He lived with his mother in a one-bedroom house that flooded every time the river swelled. I lived two doors down, kind of like I do now. ⋆.˚⭒.˚ ⋆⭒˚｡⋆ 𝐕𝐢𝐨𝐥𝐞𝐭 begins her junior year at University the same way she did the year before, rooming with her best friend, Frankie and dating the star baseball player. But this year, there are new students living down the hall; one of which, Violet recognizes as her childhood friend, Tenny. His presence reminds her of a life she tried to forget. Through trials and triumphs, Violet recalls her past: the good and the bad, and she realizes some things were never meant to stay buried. Jaanvika looked into his eyes the way one looks into deep water. She was compelled but uncertain of the depth,"Wh - why?" "Just to annoy you." Ever wonder where supervillains go after their fight with the hero? What about the other side of the story? It's not like they sit in their lair cackling all day and planning how to kidnap reporters. What about the lives they lead? And instead of just focusing on that, what if the superhero and the supervillain knew each other? I mean, can they see behind the mask? No, so their identities are secret. So what if the hero and villain were best friends? What if they were roommates? What if they were falling for each other? And what happens when they find out? Now, I assume you know all of these questions will be answered in this book. But hold on. It's going to take a while. You're in for a bumpy ride. And if any of you got any of the references in this description, give yourself a pat on the back. That is a beautiful thing.
