When Merlin returns after Arthur's death, it's obvious that he's devastated.
Gaius, Gwen, and the remaining knights see it, and the new of Gwaine's death doesn't help anyone.
Merlin becomes emotionally distant, and though he's still snarky and joking, there isn't quite that shine in his eyes.
Gwen tries to grieve with him, being his closest and oldest friend, but Merlin insists that he's fine.
Until he forces himself to clean Arthur's room, and the all too familiar memories he's been trying to forget come tumbling back, forcing Merlin to admit that he really isn't fine.

I got the inspiration for this story from a similar oneshot on Fanfiction.net by Aeon The Dimensional Girl if the user wishes for me to take this one down I will, however I will point out that I expanded on the concept and definitely made it my own. Originally gonna be a one shot, but ended up being too long for a one shot. Merlin returns to Camelot after Arthur dies and gets banished by Gwen. He goes to sit by the lake of Avalon to wait for Arthur. Eventually Arthur returns. Merlin is not immortal in this version, however he is still extremely powerful. This is about their life together.
