For the last ten years, creatures known as Shadows haunt the town of Newdale, hunting the townsfolk and causing mischief and mayhem wherever they can.  Some in the city rise up boldly to try to fight against these foes, but not Darian.  Sixteen-year-old Darian Danforth VanEaton has never had any grand ambitions or outstanding life goals.  He is content in his life as the son of a gardener, and he has never minded the family's tradition to send one person to the Pontsworth Academy of Magical Defense.  He is perfectly willing to sit back and let life happen however it desires.  Big plans and goals are for other people, not for him.  He will do his best at whatever swordwork or mathematics homework is set before him, but he has no grand illusions that anything he could do will change the world.

Darian is soon to learn that such a disconnected outlook on life is not healthy when surrounded by a pack of deadly monsters with nothing but a small suitcase to protect himself and the Shadowmancer himself closing in on him.  Perhaps in order to truly live his life, it is time to make some decisions.
