"I was born before the time of Land, and before the time of Upheaval, during the last fifty years of the time of Canals, year thirteen hundred sixty one by the calendar then. I knew by the time I was three that I wanted to be a bard."

So begins the memoir of Scasha Sailborne, the greatest and last of the high bards. A story told like a memory, with interspersed myths, songs, and stories to give life to the tale-telling magic of this world.

The Mermaid's Key: A Novella, écrit par JeremyBennett2
12 chapitres Terminé
After his grandfather Theo's passing, James sets about clearing and cleaning up his grandfather's belongings before the estate sale when he runs into something peculiar. A box made of shells, worn shut with time, and hidden in the dark recesses of the past. The contents: a key, a brass heart, a journal and letters that leave behind a glimpse into a part of his grandfather's life that James never expected - a world of ancient magic, witches and wizards, mermaids and a love story strong enough to break any heart. The legends are real, partly. Atargatis, the first mermaid, was an ancient witch thrown into the sea by the hostile and fearful townspeople who didn't understand the magic they knew and sensed. What they didn't see was the consequences of their actions, Atargatis' use of magic and the creation of the mermaid with all of its magical abilities. Centuries later Ariana, a young daughter of the clan leader, lives her life in torment, torn between her love of everything under the ocean and the beauty of the boundless sky above. She discovers Theodore, a human, and falls so much in love that she can't fathom a life without him - an ideal that she will go to any length to stand by. What you think you know is but a small part of a much larger story, one that before now has never been told. Love is simply a transfer of energy from one of us to another, all of us connected in a web that we simply label "The Universe." Love and sacrifice have consequences, some which can never be foreseen.

Of all the blades and bullets in the world, nothing cuts like a song. Whispers on the wind that burrow deep into the heart of any man with ears and often from the mouths of others. Merchants with eyes for gold and gilding hearing of pearls and drops of sun. Sailors with hands for nets hearing of waters like glass full of creatures unknown. Even scholars, who've lived for little else but maps, parchment, and pages Soaked with ink, turn to the world for more than knowledge, or satins, silks, or spices. Lured by a tune like a fish to a hook, hungry for a dream. But what if that dream comes at a cost more hefty than coin? What if the price cuts as deep as the song, And soaks your hands redder than the ledger you're desperate to fill. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Since the first siren sighting, people have told tales of their dangers, warning Sailors to be wary of their bewitching songs, lest they lead them early to a dark Watery grave. Only a fool would leave his ears open to a Sirens song, or so many have been told, until Whispers of magic stranger and more enticing came, rumors of miracles and medicine made possible if you were brave enough to face the seas to claim a Sirens scales. Since the rising tide of such tales, the seas became far quieter, as rich choruses of song were sharply silenced, and the ocean itself became even more vicious with fury at its children being hunted. Hunted by Scholars thirsty for forbidden wisdom. Hunted by merchants greedy for more bloodstained wealth. Hunted by soldiers, clad in royal colors, setting out by the thousands to collect for their king. A queen cries out to the ocean for help. For a hero to save her children. And the ocean sends no hero. The ocean sends pirates. The ocean sends those who once fled from the sound of Sirens songs, now singing choruses of their own, brandishing scales of silver and steel, hungering for things greater than gold. They want glory. They want blood. They want revenge. They want a kings head.

❝Thaddeus Wraith had successfully destroyed the fortress within my head and scrambled my senses. Which was strange. How had I gone from fearing somebody, maybe even loathing them. To wanting to feel him against me, the heat that radiated off his body--for his lips to move against mine. I craved the chaos that we had together, and by gods did it intoxicate me to know that I had him. 𝒜𝓁𝓁 𝑜𝒻 𝒽𝒾𝓂. Every damaged, broken piece, every intrusive thought that came into his mind when those green eyes bore into mine. I had it all. ❞ ━━━━━━━━༻❁༺━━━━━━━━ Orion Vale was meant to drown when a storm took him at sea--but instead, a siren's magic spared his life.
