Distortion of timeline or timelines causes something very unexpected to happen. Sans has warned multiple times to not Reset, it will cause glitches or something that should not be possible will happen. Such eventually  occurs, due to ignorance something called DISTORTION EVENT. Something horrible happens, his timeline, au were erased, due to instability. Thus making him homeless, however this is not the case as Sans somehow became Glitched skeleton. He learns about Multiverse and that his au is not only one sufforing from Frisk's misaction. Determined to save the Multiverse. He's asleep during it. On a conscious level, he's never left the Anti-Void. As a result, he's clueless. Side note: all characters and art belong to their respectful owners. Summary: He didn't know who this being was or how they found him but they were scaring him to the point he was going to cry.
