Recognizing the Warning Signs: Common Symptoms of Kidney Failure

A chronic disorder that compromises kidney function is called chronic kidney disease (CKD). The kidneys are an important organ that removes waste and excess fluid from the blood, makes urine, regulates electrolyte levels and keeps the balance of fluids within the body.

In CKD, kidneys slowly become ineffective at performing these vital tasks. The condition usually develops over the course of time or a period of years and can be noticeable at the beginning. As the disease progresses, a myriad of symptoms can develop, such as fatigue, swelling of ankles and legs, as well as more frequent urine output (especially at night) and foamy urine. Other kidney failure symptoms include constant discomfort, cramps in the muscles and a decreased appetite.

CKD is usually caused due to conditions that compromise kidney function, including diabetes and high blood pressure autoimmune illnesses (e.g. Lupus) and polycystic kidney disease, or the prolonged use of certain medicines. The risk is also elevated by factors such as smoking, age and obesity, as well as the existence of a kidney disease family history.
