Jack has always been an admirable man, ever since he came to work for Mr. Raymond on the farm. He was 15 when he first showed up, an orphan from out of town who needed the money to support himself. With time, he became the farmer's right hand man in a way. Like a son to him.
So of course, when Mr Raymond's niece Alice came to live with him, he couldn't have pictured a better suitor for her.
