Rutledge Byrnes - better known as Ruth - has lived in Beacon Hills her entire life, having met Scott McCall and Stiles Stilinski when they were little kids and been inseparable from them ever since. They've seen each other through thick and thin; when Stiles' mom died, when Ruth lost her parents in a B&E gone wrong, when Scott was attacked by a werewolf.

When Scott was turned into a werewolf, all their lives were turned upside down, but now, almost 2 years later, everything seems to be falling back into place. But then, an attack in the woods, two girls ripped to shreds, one claiming a vampire is roaming loose throws their plans of a normal life out the window.

At the same time, a new freshman transfers to Beacon Hills High. Liam Dunbar, the hot-headed, lacrosse protégé, catches Ruth attention. But when Scott is forced to bite him, turning him into a werewolf, trouble brews between them.

After looking into the past a bit she discovers some information she's been desperately searching for and not to long after she discovers something beyond what she ever thought was possible.
