In which El and Will have moved back to Hawkins for sophomore year, the world is starting to turn Upside Down once again. Max is fully recovered from her coma, and the party assumes they are done with their battle with Vecna. Or are they?
As Max and El grow closer because of El's struggles in school, in relationships, and with her identity, things are looking very badly for El's brother, Will. Not only is he faced with yet more supernatural torture, but also emotional torture. Vecna knows Will's secret. And he will do everything he can to remind Will of it, to remind him that he doesn't belong; that there is a reason he hides the truth from his friends.
There is only one person who can save Will: his best friend since kindergarten. It's hard enough for Mike right now, with his unsteady relationship and undiagnosed depression. But when Will is in danger, none of that matters. It is him who will save Will from Vecna's curse.
