Becca and Will were once best friends. From immediately clicking at the school bus stop at five-years-old, to bonding over their love for hockey and future ambitions, it was always Becca and Will. Will and Becca.

Even as they navigated the toughest parts of their lives, they could always count on each other. Becca had met Will when she had needed him the most, and Becca stood by Will through the times he could barely keep it together with everything going on at home.

Nevertheless, as inseparable as they were, Becca one day simply disappeared. She left without explaining or even saying goodbye, and Will never heard from her again.

That is, until eleven years later, she showed up at his team's arena, where he was the star player for the Chicago Whispers, claiming she was the new team publicist. Eleven years of silence made Will want nothing to do with her, but still, she pushed and held onto their lingering love for each other, determined to explain everything and get back in his life, even if it means walking the tightrope that hangs between their past life and the present.

Still, as time passes and life stories are exchanged, Becca and Will might just realize that they aren't meant to be best friends this time around.

Maybe, just maybe, they are meant to be so much more.

Jake Bryers is no stranger to the pressures of being a professional hockey player. It's something that he's dealt with consistently for the past fifteen years. Throughout his career, he's experienced it all-the electric thrill of winning divisions and conference titles, and even making it to the Stanley Cup Finals on more than one occasion. His dream was always to skate the cup at least once, but as he enters the late stage of his long, tumultuous career, he finds himself struggling to perform like he once had as a younger, inspired player. Harper Clark has been proficient at one thing throughout her life-constantly moving forward without really going anywhere. After having moved to the Big Apple to pursue a better life outside of the dangerous one she found herself leading in the Midwest, she finds herself stagnating after getting her degree from Columbia. She quietly enjoys her job at the public library, treading water while the undeniable feeling of discontent grows stronger within her. It's nothing short of fate when Jake and Harper happen to cross paths at the library, and though their lives couldn't be any more different, they find themselves inexplicably drawn to one another as they try to navigate mending each other's wounded hearts.

I had been second best all my life. But this time, when it comes to her, I'm not willing to accept defeat. I'll do whatever it takes to get her to choose me. *** Having a best friend that was wildly popular, and one of the best hockey players in the United American Hockey League, was both a curse and a blessing. On the plus side, I got to play hockey with my best friend, and there was never a shortage of beautiful girls. At least there wasn't until Nash decided to man up and tell his childhood friend that he'd always loved her. The bad part was that I usually ended up being second best. In my late teens and early twenties I hadn't cared that I wasn't picked in the first round of the draft, or that sponsors chose Nash ahead of me, or even if I ended up with a girl who didn't really want me for me. I made a nice living playing hockey. I had a few good friends and a nice place to live in the middle of Manhattan. Despite not being the best, I'd made most of my dreams come true and it was a far stretch from the lonely kid I'd been growing up in the rural Midwest. I was happy. I was content. Until her.... It's not like I didn't want what Nash had. I did. I do. Who doesn't want a happily ever after? It's just that I've never taken the risk and allowed a woman to see past my defenses before, to see the real me, with my baggage and all my insecurities... until now. As scary as that is in itself, what makes it complicated is that my new roommate, Jackson - who I offered my spare bedroom to a while back when he needed a place to stay - and Bryce - one of my friends and teammates- also seem to have an interest in her... the woman who has me questioning all my decisions. The thing is... I'm pretty sure I'm not willing to be a second choice this time around...
