Austin married Marie so he could inherit his fathers company. His parents hated the woman he was interested in and said he needed a suitable wife or he could kiss his inheritance goodbye. So he asked Marie and she agreed as she was in love with him. He used her as a cover up and now she is taking her revenge on all who knew. She lost two years of her life being humiliated at every turn treated as if she was a lowlife. Now it's time for the truth to come out. Friendships form in weird ways. Friendships also last in different varieties. The fact that Anna and Jakes friendships evolved after Anna punched Jake in preschool for touching her favorite colors is besides the point though. These two have been through so much more than that.
