Scarlett has dreamed about being a Creative for her whole life. She is an artist and cannot imagine her life without creating the images that she sees before her. If she is not chosen to be a Creative she will be forced to live a life as a Basic. She cannot even imagine something so terrible to not be allowed to express herself through her art or risk a punishment that could be worse than death. When the age for the Creative Ceremony is lowered she knows that it is her opportunity to show the head Creator, Elias, what she can do, that she is worthy, talented enough to be a Creative. But the Creatives are not what they seem. Elias, who she idolizes, is holding a secret that will most certainly destroy him. The world that Scarlett has always known is an illusion.
