It is there that he discovers the true nightmare of World War One, and how the greatest courage was shown in the bloodiest battle Britain has ever seen.

That's the point, the reader canonically cannot understand German. You aren't expected to translate everything (but you can if you want to, I might have slipped in a few jokes.)
