Cole is stuck in summer school; lucky for him, his only friend Adam is, too. Before the air-conditionless torture begins, the two discover a trunk of old papers high up in a deserted treehouse, and when they begin reading, they find that the stories are written about them. Because of the strange tales, Cole begins to believe he has powers that were transferred to him from a lightning bolt that struck him years ago. Adam, however, doesn't really pay attention to Cole--he has other things to worry about, like figuring out what happened to his dad and trying to stop some stranger from dating his mom. The summer's a weird one, and as Cole starts to befriend an old enemy, things turn sour. When a tornado hits town at the end of the summer and Adam disappears, Cole is no longer sure he knows his friend well enough to find him.

At the heart of the mystery is the abandoned Hawthorn Manor, a decaying mansion that has stood untouched on the outskirts of town for decades. Rumors swirl about its dark past, involving a family that mysteriously disappeared many years ago. Now, whispers of a curse draw curious outsiders and thrill-seekers, but none return the same-or at all. As they piece together the puzzle, they discover that the manor is not just haunted by spirits of the past, but by an ancient, malevolent force that thrives on fear and darkness. In a race against time, Emily and her friends must confront the source of the evil before it consumes them all, forcing them to face their deepest fears and uncover the long-buried secrets that could either save the town-or doom it forever.
