Ace is a time traveler, a keeper of secrets, bound by the rules left behind by her grandfather and the strange, ticking watch that she found after he died. She's on a mission in 1983 Hawkins, Indiana, a town as mysterious as it is quiet. Her task seems simple enough-blend in, observe, and protect the fragile balance of time. And above all, follow The Rules. Especially Rule Number 7: Never form close relationships.
But then Maxine Mayfield arrives. Max is the kind of girl who doesn't care much about fitting in-she's got a wild shock of red hair, a skateboard she's almost never seen without, and a fearless spirit. She's funny, loyal, and sharp, the kind of friend Ace has never had. The kind she can't afford to keep.
As they grow closer, strange things begin happening in Hawkins, and the stakes of Ace's mission grow higher. With each passing day, Ace has a feeling that the watches are ticking louder. Ace is faced with an impossible choice: stay loyal to her mission or risk everything for a relationship that was never meant to be. In a world bound by rules, breaking just one might be the only way to save them both.
Fifteen-year-old Jane 'Eleven' Hopper has one goal. Ignore Max Mayfield. Easy enough.
Unfortunately for Eleven, though, Max has other plans.
Eleven wasn't planning on falling in love again. Max being in her life now could change that. Eleven can't be in love with Max, though. Girls liking girls is not a common phenomenon in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana.
But Max is determined to get Eleven to love her. She's always wanted love and she thought she had it before, but it didn't feel right with her boyfriend. Now, Eleven is faced with the decision of having a girlfriend and being bullied, a best friend and keeping her boyfriend happy, or an enemy.
Eleven doesn't have powers in this. She's just an average tenth-grade girl with Max as her enemy.
