When the war ended he ran. Not because he was betrayed but because he was scared, scared that he would lose control like he did with Achlys.

300 years after Percy Jackson is left behind in Tartarus, a quest is able to enter the Pit and bring him home to Camp Half-Blood. Annabeth knew it was going to be difficult after getting him out, but she wasn't expecting it to kick off the first war since Gaea was put back to sleep 300 years before when a flesh and blood ancient deity stirs and rises from the Pit after them.
