In this tale, a young woman longs to be unique for a variety of reasons. So that her friend wouldn't point out how dark she was, she wished she were lighter. To get along with teachers, she wished she was smarter. She wished she was slimmer so boys would pay attention to her. To make more friends, she wished she were more attractive. She wished she could be mentally healthy and free from concern. She has many wishes.

She wished to be normal, pretended to be normal. That's what it is with pretending, when you begin to pretend you begin to believe.
