Evangeline Jackson lives a double life; Call her Hannah Montana except very black and very gay. Her life consists of hiding two big secrets: the fact that she's never thought of dating a man in her life and the fact that she's a very famous underground jazz singer. And because she's afraid that those things will destroy the solid high school reputation she's built up, she keeps them to herself.
You can imagine how her heart dropped when a transfer student named Charlie Castellano asks her out at one of her performances and then shows up at her school knowing both of her secrets. But things get messy when they start spending more time together and the walls Evangeline spent forever building up start to break down.

Charlie adjusted her grip to holding Evangeline's hand. She placed a soft kiss to it, looking up. "I'd like to take you on a date. If you're okay with that."

The whole camp was filling with smoke. I coughed, praying that my lungs would keep working for just a few more minutes. "Eli, which way is west?"
