Maybe it was Memphis

What does Whitman High, a brainiac, a pair of dim-witted wannabe’s, two friends and an irritating rooster have in common? They all have a part to play in Thea Bennington’s life when her parents decide Memphis is the place to settle down and raise their sixteen year old daughter.

When Thea Bennington enters Whitman High for the first time, she imagines it will be like all the other schools she's attended. She finds out soon enough that assumption couldn't be further from the truth. She did have a boyfriend for a short time at her last school, but other than that she's always been a school skipping loner.
Thea becomes fast friends with Mary Paisley before second period ends. Mary in turn introduces Thea to Ronni Rawlings. The three of them become instant besties.

Meg and Laynie, on the other hand, are two girls Thea would be best off staying clear of. The reason, she tends to have a strange knack of making the two dim-witted wannabe's angry enough to want to pummel her.

Thea gets introduced to Jarred Campbell at the county fair, and an instant school girl crush ensues. The only problem is, Ronni just broke up with her cheating boyfriend and has designs of her own on Jarred. In order to retain her new-found friendship, Thea vows to stay clear of him.
To help get Thea to forget about crushing on Jarred, Mary invites Thea to Rock Mill, the local swimming hole. It's there that Mary introduces her friend to Preston Rawlings, Ronni's cousin. Thea's pleasantly surprised by his over the top good looks. It's when he opens his mouth she realizes that he's an arrogant idiot.
From this point on, Thea's days are spent dreaming of Jarred and doing everything she can to avoid Preston.
