Kai Brentwood is a lone, 17 year old boy: He's introverted and barely engages with anything and anyone he's not familiar with. He skips inspection day, uses the stalls in the men's restroom, and is moody every now and then, but why? Kai's a total mystery to those around him, and no one seems to understand him.

What happens in the past stays in the past, but when someone tries to reveal Kai's secrets, he breaks down: hums become drums beating on the sides of his brain, taps become bells that ring endlessly, and voices become the ongoing screams in his head. Once Kai realizes he can't do this alone, he doesn't know if he should allow his barrier to be broken upon and make an effort to fall in love with some overly optimistic new kid.

Brandon Clifflorn is another 17 year old male, that had moved from Orlando to California because of an incident; in which, he refuses to communicate further on the issue. When his homeroom teacher notices strange bruising under his sleeve, Brandon is assigned weekly sessions with his new guidance counselor.

Confusingly so, the bruises disappear, and no other injuries are found on the boy during inspection day. The counselor just can't seem to put his finger on the situation, since Brandon appears as a surprisingly very outgoing and active person. Although, the deceiving facade is over when he enters the prison he calls a home, and faces the warden: His mother.

This is a romance book, mainly focusing on Ashton and Kai, but also focusing on the others in the book a bit too. This book is filled with lots of ups and downs, including sad moments, happy moments, and plenty of other moments the characters will face.
