Michael is visiting Japan, his father's home country, but he feels left out. Not only can he not speak a sentence in Japanese, he doesn't resemble his family or anyone in the country whatsoever. Anyone who sees him can tell he's never been here before.

The only excitement he gets is when his family boards the shinkansen, the famous bullet train that's rumored to be the fastest in Japan. And that's the least frightening rumor. The others are much darker. Stories of people going missing near the train station. Especially the legend of the Teke Teke, the ghost who used to be a normal girl before meeting her demise by the shinkansen.

At first, Michael brushes them off. They're just legends and rumors, after all.

But then, he sees how pale and eerie the passengers seem, how they lack any emotion or warmth in their pale faces and hollow eyes. The dark shadowy figure running along the tracks, fast enough to keep up with the train. And the terrifying sound that repeats in his head...

Scars. Many had formed on the child's body as she listened to her family get ripped to shreds. The mountain whispered in the cold night, it told her to run and not to stop. It was the voice of her mother, even her older brother, and it echoed in her mind despite the growing pain of falling and getting thrown down multiple times. Demons. It was unbelievable. Well until she saw it with her own eyes. How? Why? Attacked. Her family was attacked by a demon. They told her to run. So she did. She ran and ran and ran. She was injured, but ran. So many questions filled her head, but she ran like her family told her too. Suddenly, a man saved her from another attack. It was fast and wielded fire with his blade. Who was he? A Demon Slayer. Why had he come? To save people from the beast, but she was the only one to save if he could save her from such injuries. She was younger than his son, but thought they'd get along well... so he killed the demon and quickly took the girl to one of his fellow peers, someone who could actually help. When she woke up... she saw a boy, a few years older than her. He seemed bright and caring, something new for the girl. What happens after that? What troubles will the girl face after that incident? She thinks it's only while using her big box of 64 crayons. She doesn't realize the power is in her mind's eye and not her writing implements. Jo (20) can teleport. Of course she doesn't always stick her landings. At first her landings are as messy as is her life. She's lost her mother, her family home, her faith and now thinks she may be losing her mind. Supercilious self-absorbed Amy (17) has the uncanny ability to get others to do what she wants. She says, ever so sweetly, "I'd prefer..." Dad always called it "wrapping others around her little finger syndrome." If she wanted she could ask a perfect stranger to hand over his car keys and he'd have to oblige. The oldest sister Meg (21) has dreams and visions about the world's near future. She's also very intuitive. Perhaps if she were better at seeing her own future maybe her personal life wouldn't be in shambles?
