He didn't want to run, he wanted to save Rengoku from dying in the hands of the demon. But he knew it was futile, if he even tried to fight, he would've died soon after. With a threatening injury from his fight with lower moon one, what use was he gonna be against an Upper moon?

"Oh Kyojuro~ no matter how far they run, I will catch up to them. You are strong Kyojuro but you can't hold me off long in such a breakable body!" Akaza laughed.
