Fifteen-year-old Lin Ruoying has got it all- she's smart, athletic, and popular. She's a genius in all she does, and so when her school's annual math competition rolls around, she's confident she has what it takes to win at last.
Unlike last year, when she accidentally rounded to the nearest tenth instead of hundredth, and her team kicked her off for ruining their chance to win, as if she wasn't hurt and humiliated enough already.
This year, though, Ruoying is sure that it'll be different. She's got a new friend group who is ever supportive of her, she's participating in her school's orchestra, and she's even found an after-school woodworking class to sharpen her skills. And so she studies and practices, carefully outlining all the possible ways to win.
But all of her plans fail when she steps into the auditorium. And suddenly, Ruoying doesn't know what to do, because her genius is finally being rivaled by someone- and this someone happens to be a prodigy on the tennis court, and on top of that, he makes her heart stutter every time she looks at him.
At least she won't have to see him anymore. He's a year above her, and it's an unspoken rule at school- third years don't interact with second years. For once, she's glad for it, because every time she pictures him, all she can remember is her crushing loss.
Yes, only that. And definitely not how kind of cute he actually is.
But fate always has a way, and soon Ruoying begins spending more time with the tennis team. Through victories and defeats, highs and lows, she begins to discover who, really, makes her world feel like Elysium.
