Original Greek: μανία (manía)

Mania is seen as obsessive love and the last type of love according to the Ancient Greeks.

Mania is excessive love that reaches the point of obsession or madness. It occurs when the balance of eros, sexual love, and ludus, playful love, are not in accordance with one another. As a type of love, mania is not healthy, and the Greeks knew this as well as we do. It relates to stalking behaviors, co-dependance, jealousy, paranoia, and toxicity and can lead to madness and angry outbursts. It describes what a jilted lover feels when they are extremely jealous of a rival or the unhealthy obsession that can result from mental illness.

This type of love often impacts people who have low self-esteem because they are so afraid of losing the person that they love that they become manic or crazy. This type of love can destroy relationships in some cases.

In this story however, mania describes the beginning of a relationship. Not only the beginning but also the continuing of a relationship becomes a combination of mania and other types of love.

Mania in combination with ludus because their love becomes an obsessive game.

Mania in combination with eros because their love is passionate yet obsessive.

Mania in combination with agape because in the end they would both die for each other.

Whether this is still seen as love, you should decide for yourself. But one thing is for certain, it all started with mania.
