You had been secretly admiring tomioka for about a year now. (You've had a crush on him.) but you can't bring yourself to the idea of even liking him. You've always told yourself, how could I like anyone without knowing there personality first? There likes and dislikes? So you've promised yourself that you wouldn't like anyone unless you actually knew them. So you refer to admiring someone.
You were pretty cool about it until you realized tomioka started catching onto your 'admiring' you began to get shy about it, as he admired you back.
