Irina is a Grisha-more specifically, a Phoenix Summoner. Sounds cool, right? The Original Phoenix Summoner who can summon a ball of fire, light up the world, or sprout fire wings at will? Well, for Irina, it's not exactly like that. Her powers are bound by her emotions, making them unpredictable and uncontrollable. She can't just call on them whenever she wants.

Irina hates leaving her room. She prefers to hide away, pretending the world doesn't exist. The only times she ventures out are to eat or train-those are the only things she can bear. Her solace is in books. Reading brings her peace, offering an escape from the fears and uncertainties of the world around her.

People, including other Grisha, fear her-fear what she is. They look at her as if she's cursed by the Saints or has come from hell itself. It's a living nightmare to be seen as something to fear, something to avoid. Irina never asked to be a Phoenix Summoner. She never wanted this life.

All she ever wanted was to live a normal life, to be with her friends again in Ketterdam. She misses Kaz and Inej deeply. At just ten years old, Irina was tested by Grisha Examiners, and when they discovered her powers, she was immediately taken to the Little Palace. Her friends had to watch in heartbreak as they were helpless to stop her. Irina prays to the Saints every night, hoping that one day she can escape the palace and return to her beloved friends.

Everything changes when Alina Starkov arrives at the Little Palace. The Sun Summoner-the one who can defeat the Fold. The Summoner everyone adores, the one everyone worships. And with Alina's presence, everything in Irina's life is about to shift.

She's grown up training to be the best and fought in the Vietnam war as an undercover assassin. Although when it comes to the outside world she's clueless and knows not the ways of the social world, she excels and is a sacred warrior when it comes to the spy world. She doesn't like being told what to do or how to do it. She yearns to have the blood of her enemies on her hands and dripping down her samurai sword. One day she goes out to the supermarket to gather food, playing "normal" she tries her best to fit in, but it doesn't go so well. Irma somehow manages to help this young woman. She even decides to take her in. Irma is in it for a friend, but she doesn't know that her roommate is an assassin yearning to do many dirty things to her, things that Irma have never done, things that are normal for the assassin.

Everyone gets to choose and the last one goes to the General after everyone chose since he was talked into it. Amira doesn't think much of it since she's hid with her secret but decides when she gets the paper to put her true nature on her paper of Sun Summoner and Tidemaker with an A. The Key thing is to write and then after your third or fourth letter you can arrange a meet up. As Amira watches she sees the anticipation of all the other Grisha girls except her friends. But it's clear their choice of paper was not what they wanted. Marie doesn't seem to mind her own and Nadia doesn't. When it's Amira's chance to pick she reaches in worried she'll get her own paper but as she pulls it out and looks at it she sees a darkling symbol with the letter A. Fedyor checks seeing one left and takes it to Aleksander as he places it down informing it that this was the last one. Aleksander opens it figuring it was a Squaller, Inferni, or one of the others and easy for him to figure out but is surprised when he sees two Grisha symbols with the letter A. Will they figure it out?

I was born to be a princess, not a military leader like my brother. Marry well, do and say all the right things, I was told, and perhaps I could even rise to the throne of Ravka, perhaps alongside one of the King's sons as my husband. I had everything, but I didn't like my life. I wanted to be free, like my brother. The queen's attendant, Genya, called me a 'wild child.' She still does. I train regularly with the Grisha in the Second Army at the Little Palace, but I've rarely ever left the Little Palace. But when a girl named Alina Starkov arrived at the Little Palace, courtesy of my brother, everything began to change. Aleksander thought she was the Sun Summoner, the one to heal all of Ravka. And as time changed, a sinister plan began to take hold of the Little Palace, as well as all of the Grisha and the rest of the court. And Alina was getting caught in the middle of it. But so was I. Behind him, a monster ten feet tall, made of shadow, forms in a menacing stance, ready to carry out his silent orders. I thought I had seen the last of his nichevo'ya a long time ago when we were on opposing sides of the war. I shake my head. "No. No, what are you doing? Wait!" I send the Cut barrelling at the monster. It dissociates into nothing only for another one to take its place. Again, I send the Cut through the abomination, but it was only a diversion. Another one forms behind me, capturing my arms to prevent me from summoning. It holds me above the ground. I kick and scream, but it covers my mouth with its long, slender arm, the other holding me securely to its chest. My breath is labored as I use all of my strength to fight it. It is futile. The Darkling approaches me, stroking his fingers across my cheek as a way to comfort me. It is hard, however, to comfort someone if you are the cause of the distress. "I will do anything in my power to protect you, my Dear Alina. Anything."
