The summer before her sophomore year in high school, Eleanor Edison's twin sister is gruesomely murdered, causing Eleanor to break down from the guilt. After an extensive stay at a youth mental hospital, she returns to her hometown of Mystic Falls, carrying with her the realization that the guilt should not fall to her but to the very people she once called friends; but the town she finds upon her return is not the same one she left behind and a mysterious stranger convinces her that maybe a bit of revenge is in order.
