Alexander (Alex) is going to the next half of the year in England, at precatory academy, a big boarding school. It's a long way from Western Australia. Away from the dust, away from the long, hot summer days, away from the creaky porch steps and homemade marmalade. There won't be Walter to wake her up in the morning, there won't even be a dribble baby gurgling away at the table. Precatory Academy, according to her parents, will enrich her life, double the changes of becoming a lawyer and upgrade her education. But Alex misses home. Precatory had endless, beige corridors, winding staircases, closed door, and dull faces. She stumbles across a neighbouring farm, finding comfort there. Alex has to get pass the drama, boys, and horses, to compete her year.
