Merlin has been around for the last 1500 years and is eaten by guilt. 1500 of self-reflexion, of what he could have done, what he shouldn't have done, reflection on the people he saw dying. In the modern world, he try to blend as much as possible, pretending to be a student and waiting for his king to come back.
But when that day comes, Arthur is not the only one to come back and Merlin doesn't know how to deal with all the pain he feels.
