Initially, Castiel got the order to rescue both Dean Winchester and Angie Suduca, a nephilim, out of hell.

The mission went terribly wrong and several angels were killed. Castiel, only being able to take one person with him, decided to save Angie since she was destined to a greater cause on earth. He didn't expect her refusal to go with him in order to give Dean her spot. Angie was marked the "failed rescue mission", a tragedy. She was thought of as a lost cause by now, being tortured daily, alone and hopeless. 

Noone expected her to fight her own way out of hell, inevitably crossing paths with the Winchesters as soon as she gets back. Only that Dean doesn't even know of her sacrifice for him...All Rights Reserved
