Johnny Johnnerson has always been bullied at school because of his name. He hates his parents, who gave him his name, his so called "friends" Harold and Frank who use him to keep their grades up, and his older sister, Sally, who suggested the name in the first place. 

Johnny can't wait for summer when he doesn't have to see his bullies at school anymore, until his parents announce their vacation to Australia. Johnny doesn't want to go at first- but then he discovers he has the ability to understand koalas. The koalas are the first creatures to not tease him about his name, and when it's time to go home, Johnny has a choice to make: return home to his bullies, or sneak away and start a new life with the koalas.
