The world is cruel; Neteyam struggles to ignore his burning love for the one person he firmly believes he can never have. It eats at him, always a thought present in the back if his mind, lingering, tearing into his soul and leaving him restless and full of longing. He yearns for Ao'nung's love, and seeks out others in his attempt to fill the void in his chest, though it hardly works.
He's in pain; he feels unloved, unlovable - every day since coming to Awa'atlu, he's been nothing but a disappointment. Neteyam is scared of his father, of the repercussions that follow his misdeeds, however little they may be. He bottles it up, until he cannot keep himself composed anymore.
