Asteria, a very curious yet unassuming young girl who has only just begun her 18th year, finds herself in the midst of a terrible battle! Her elder brother Edward and her elder sister Æthelflæd were drawn into the war between the Danes and the Saxons and are now fighting for the honour of their family and that of their father!

Even though Asteria doesn't have much to do with war or politics, Lady Ælswith still wants her youngest daughter to be safe! Which is why she sends her to a convent nearby! There Asteria meets Uhtred Ragnarsson and his men! They have a woman with them, she looks mean and dangerous!

Asteria decides to befriend the men but stay away from the woman. It didn't take long until she had made friends with the men and even more than friendship developed between her and one of the men!

Sihtric Kjartansson, at least as unassuming as her, was a stunningly beautiful, strong warrior who was loyal to Uhtred! Knowing that their love would not stand a chance, as she was another princess of Winchester, Sihtric soon turned away from Asteria with a heavy heart...

Asteria did not understand why he turned away from her and made it her goal to fight for their love! Hoping that she could soon hold her Dane in her arms again, she started travelling with Uhtred and his men! But at what price?
