All's Fair in Love, War, and Feudalism

We worked in the orchard side by side, talking. I tried to keep a secret of how tired I was. Around midday, Andy said something that surprised me.
“Justin?”
“Do you want something?”
“Yes. I want to join the crusades.”
“Those wars that Pope Urban wants us all to join? Why would you want to do that?”
“I think it would be fun.”
I told Andy the same thing I had told Caroline. “You think that would be fun? You would travel all over, sure, but then have to either kill a Muslim or be killed by a Muslim. But that totally sounds like fun, right?”

Justin is a serf who lives and works alongside his mother, father, and twin brother Andy. Life on the manor is hard but enjoyable, especially after he starts a forbidden friendship with Caroline, the Lord's daughter.
