Katie strolled down Main Street, sloshing her new bright teal boots in the melting snow. She was headed to meet Chris, at Martha’s Ice Cream Haven, for a hot chocolate. Martha’s had been a special place for them since their first date in high school. Martha was also a surrogate mother to Chris, making her special all on her own. This was their usual Sunday morning routine, a little hot chocolate with Martha and her scone of the week. Then, depending on the weather, they would head out on some adventure or to a quiet movie. Christmas, was just about three weeks away, so the weather wasn’t permitting them to do a lot at this point. She had no idea what was on the agenda for the day. Chris was being a little secretive these days and rather than making Katie excited, it was scaring her a tad. Katie was afraid the surprise was going to be a marriage proposal. She loved Chris, she had loved him since she was just a kid. The decade they had spent apart hadn’t diminished her feelings for him, nor had it made the slightest dent in his for her. Of course, she’d been completely stubborn about it when they did get their second chance. She’d made him work, probably harder than she should have. She didn’t want to do the same thing with an engagement, but the reality was she was unsure about marriage.

How do you tell your best friend you love them? How do you know they feel the same? How do you stop your heart getting broken in the process? Honestly, in a place, you feel comfortable with the other and just take the risk. You don't unless they are an open book of emotions. Hearts are made to be broken; if it's not by them someone else will break it somehow. This is a situation for two pairs of best friends separated by the decades... In 1950 Corinne goes on a month long trip with her family to the Madison businesses, taking an aching heart with her. Add a slightly secretive father, fainting mother, three brothers with two of them looking to take over the business and a serving girl Elsie, you get a relatively normal posh family. Corinne's childhood friend Callum carries an aching heart while she is away and misses her presence. Him, Corinne and a few others have been clueless about how they have always felt for each other, the others knowing all along. So when the others give him an opportunity, Callum tells Corinne how he feels after a card game threat and a surprise night visit from Corinne. In 2015 being in a military family is hard, which is what Dae and Dustin know first hand. The pair of them have a ridiculous amount of connections, few being known like how Dae's mother served with Dustin's father throughout deployments. Dae had always pushed Dustin away when he wanted to get closer. On the run up to Valentine's day Dustin has a grand plan in which he hopes Dae manages to see how he feels. Presents appear in her locker, her dad gets back from deployment with a companion she was certain was not breathing and then a gift bag which Smoke doesn't react to which makes her suspicious. With your mum being trained as a bomb dog handler that's natural right? Even her dad is in on the plan. Will Dustin leave with the heart he's always wanted or will he get turned away again? Find the answers to these questions in this story!
