This book is about a boy named Arlo, who is a teenager but unfortunately has had a very tough childhood, his mom left at about the age of twelve and now he lives with his abusive dad who couldn't care less about him. He's best friends with this girl (Emaline) and if they've gotten through both their traumas then it's because of their support to each other. They are on a journey to find Emaline's mother as Arlo promised that they would (together) but then something rather surprising and strange happens, Arlo's mom comes. She's ready to take him back but the circumstances are strenuous.  Will he stay with Emaline and hold her hand while she tries to find her mother? Or will he go with his mom and live the life he always wanted, a life where he felt loved, like he had a family of his own? What does he choose? And that's just the beginning. Where will he be years from now? Will he be happy?  Because ultimately, isn't that what we're all trying to do?
