Years after Plague, a vengeful rogue, tried to kill Myrtlewing's son, Waspbeak, she attacked again. This time, she almost killed Hootpetal as well as her own daughter, Banshee, and Banshee's unborn kits--as well as the kits to Shallowfig, Waspbeak's brother.
Shallowfig knows that Plague is still out there, that she could come back any time and kill Banshee or his kits. He had to prevent that, he had to train his kits intensely, had to do anything it took to keep them alive, even if it meant making them into monsters.
